America Is An Empire, And God Is Watching

Follow along with today’s media and you get various reasons why we, in America , are in the predicament we’re in.
These reasons include: fighting terrorism, avenging the 9/11 tragedy, disenchantment with capitalism, expanding socialism, disappearing freedoms, mounting debt, military adventurism, invasion of illegal aliens, monetary collapse, increasing taxes, and so on.
But the recent, most disturbing-- and possibly the most accurate reason of all - is our seemingly unstoppable march to American Empire. That is, the historic drive of once-peaceful nations to grasp, by subterfuge, devious political means, or military force, all the territory in the world it can get, control, and keep.
History shows that empires often reach vast territorial proportions. Lawrence M. Vance tells us that the kingdom of Alexander the Great reached to India. The Roman Empire controlled much of northern Europe. The Mongol Empire stretched from Asia to Europe. The Ottoman Empire reached from the Persian Gulf in the east to Hungary in the west; and from Egypt in the south to the Caucasus in the north. The British Empire included almost a quarter of the world’s population.
“Nothing, however,” says Vance, “compares to the U.S. global empire. What makes U. S. hegemony unique is that it consists, not of control of great land masses or population centers, but of a global presence unlike that of any other country in history.”
But, as history also proves, all empires enjoy only a fleeting existence in the calculus of time. That time is from 250 to 300 years; and America is at the cusp of that time zone. And because it is, we ought to be concerned with what makes empires fail: any of several things: a weakened military, financial instability of the nation, a heavy debt load, and/or a currency that is losing its value around the world.
But let’s stop right there. If, historically, all empires fail after several hundred years, and America is 300 years old, is our tenure on earth expiring in our lifetime, and if it is, how can we stop it? The frightening, but obvious answer is, we cant. So where do we go from here?
Many of us perform the act of last resort: we get down on our knees and pray. Because we know that God is watching, He will answer our prayers. But perhaps not in the way we had anticipated. Maybe in each case, the Lord looks at the nation man has put together, blessed it, but after a couple hundred years, watches as man begins destroying his own creation.
God thinks, “Doesn’t man appreciate what I gave him? Doesn’t he understand the glory of it? Why doesn’t he comprehend the blessings that he has? Doesn’t he see that each nation he builds through the centuries starts out better than the last ones, but eventually winds up killing itself; and then whines about how cruel I am?”
Consider this: God has his own plan for our planet; a plan which is part of the total design for His universe; and that each person in each nation on each planet where life may exist, is a necessary ingredient in His heavenly scheme of things.
So, what is our duty and responsibility to keep faith in? How about this: that God allows the people in peaceful nations to live and grow and enjoy life; and allows the violent people in warring nations to destroy themselves. God just watches.
God answers a nation’s prayers for an end to violence, but when a nation becomes an empire it’s years are numbered, and God answers the prayer for an end to violence by allowing the empire to die
The universe is God’s Empire. But don’t worry. That empire never dies.
