‘The USS New York: Floating Tribute or Ship of Fools?’
by James T. Moore (6/15/09)
Some stunning photos of a new military ship, the USS New York, crossed my desk awhile back and I was very impressed by it. And still am. Not by just the ship but also by the incredible story behind this handsome sea-going vessel.
The word incredible is used for good reason: the ship is either a magnificent tribute in remembrance of the nearly four thousand innocent victims who were killed when the World Trade Tower collapsed after being hit by a jet airliner on Sept 11, 2001; or the USS New York is a shameful attempt to further cover up, with commemorative audacity, the greatest fraud and horrendous crime in American history.
As the saying goes, there are always more than one side to any story. Here is one side: the building of the USS New York, on the face of it, is a genuine floating honorarium to the victims of the 9/11 tragedy.
The ship was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the devastated World Trade Center. According to its launched publicity, the USS New York is in a new class of warships designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be brought onshore by helicopters and assault craft.
Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, Los Angeles to cast the ships bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, those “big rough steel workers” treated it with total reference.Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was present recalled: “It was a spiritual experience for everybody there.” The ship’s motto is ‘Never Forget.’
The other side of this story may raise hackles, ignite tempers, and call the teller a conspiracy nut, even an un-American screwball. Nevertheless, in the quest for truth, it deserves telling, evokes questions, and demands answers.
After the Tower fell, we rushed the tons of scrap steel to Los Angeles to build a ship “honoring” victims of the 9/11 tragedy. Why the rush? Is it possible that the steel debris was quickly gotten out of town before structural engineers and explosion analysts could ascertain what really took the tower down? But a proven theory already exists: according to demolition experts, a steel building, when hit by anything, would not implode down on itself. That only happens when a building is purposely rigged for demolition. But this, of course, is still being ignored by the administration.
And why was the debris sent to the west coast when we’ve got ship-building and launching facilities in New York, next door to the tragedy itself? “Out of sight out of mind” seems to fit the scenario and is certainly plausible enough.
Finally, why was the Tower debris transformed into a ship of war, a “new class of warships”, as they say? Isn’t the massive memorial building in New York to honor the 9/11 victims enough of a tribute? Did we have to build a “ship of revenge” a sea-going “vessel of death and destruction” to honor their memory?
In this writer’s view, tit-for-tat, show-of-strength vengeance is an inappropriate way to honor our dead, no matter how they died, and for whatever reason. Rather, it would have been more “American” (if that’s what we wish to convey) to have built a ship called the “9/11 Ship of Hope” out of the debris and sent it to destitute nations around the world, carrying food and other needed provisions people need instead of another war machine designed to kill people instead of healing them.
Which side of this story makes the most sense indicates what kind of Americans we really are.
